"I’ve never understood a year. A year was always a measurement of something bad for me. A year in my father’s prison sentence, a year since my mom’s death, a year left of school before I could get far, far away from here. Now, as I look down the end of my college career, with only a little more than a semester to go, a year seems like something magical. It has been a year since Lily chose me, since she sat with me on the old swing set and made a decision that I was worthy of her. And every minute of the entire year has been better than the last." You already know their stories: Lily, the perfect princess, always living someone else's life. And Jack, the broken boy, who had stopped believing in hope. Somehow, though, they found each other and what was one night blossomed into a love story. Now, a year later, Jack and Lily are dreaming of the future. Despite all of his promises to himself that he would never be indebted to anyone, Jack makes a new promise - this time to Lily - that he will be there for her forever. But when life unravels for them, he starts to pull away, and Lily worries he's out of reach for good. When Jack does the unthinkable, Lily is left destroyed. Is it possible to have a happily ever after? Does love ever really save anyone?

18+ New Adult contemporary romance
This is a coming of age story, but it isn't always sweet and innocent. If dirty talk, bedroom toys, and threesomes offend you... this is not your book.  "No one tells you when you start school just how homesick you will be, or how hard it will be to start life over with no direction and no friends or family. No one says that becoming your own person is terrifying." I never wanted anything but Derek, my brother's best friend. When I chose a college, it didn't seem to matter that he would be an hour away. We could survive it. After all, we were in love. But almost immediately, things change between us. I blame myself. Maybe I'm just not sure how to be a girlfriend and independent. Life seems to be getting away from me - and then there's Jack, the guy down the hall. He's rude and vulgar and my parents would be shocked by him, yet every single time I see him, I feel like I'm being pulled toward him. It's physical, sure, but there's something in Jack's eyes - and I want to know him. I know I don't always make the right choices, and I'm the only person at fault when everything falls apart. How do I tell Derek, the guy who was supposed to be everything, that I don't feel like fighting for him anymore? And do I run to Jack, when I know his past is way too much for me to handle when I've just turned 19? Finally, where do I end up in all of this? Can I be more than just someone else's idea of what I should be?

Title: Lily of the Valley (Jack’s story)
LotVAuthor: Sarah Daltry
Cover: Shoutlines Design
18+ New Adult contemporary romance
Jack's story isn't pretty. He's suicidal, depressed, and he uses meaningless sex and alcohol to survive. However, the story is about finding light in the darkness, but sometimes the road there isn't always easy to walk. "No one tells you about pain. They tell you that it hurts, that sometimes it's consuming. What they don't tell you is that it's not the pain that can kill you. It's the uncomfortable numbness that follows, the weakness in your body when you realize your lungs may stop taking in air and you just can't exert enough energy to care. It's the way taste and color and smell fade from the world and all you're left with is a sepia print of misery. That's when the shift starts - the movement from passive to active. I fall asleep, hoping that the morning will bring back the pain. At least the pain is a thing." I'm a plague, a cancer. My mom is dead - and my father is in prison for it. I survived high school because college was my way out. I needed to escape, to get away from my family and the people who tortured me, but it hasn't grown any easier. I don't pretend that I'm a good person. I drink far more than I should, and I use my best friend, Alana, because together, we thrive on destroying each other - as well as the parts of us we hate. I don't believe in love, but sex is fun and it also makes me feel something. The morning I see Lily, the beautiful princess who smells inexplicably like strawberries every time I see her, I realize I'm in trouble. I should hate her. I want to hate her, because the alternative terrifies me. However, as she continues to crash into my life (often literally), I can't avoid feeling something that is the one thing I swore I would never feel. I can't fall in love, because people like me don't live in a world where love saves anyone. She just won't go away, though, and I don't know if I can keep running. The voices and the darkness hover over me and they threaten to bring me back to the safety of my hate, but the stupid scent of strawberries lingers on the horizon, as something like hope.

Warning: This book deals with topics of abuse and may trigger reactions in people who have experienced those things in their own lives. It remains a story about healing, but it's not always an easy journey. "Four. My life has been shaped by four people. Four men, to be more specific. My father, my stepfather, my best friend, and my boyfriend. The first two shaped it in horrible ways, but what I am, who I am, is all because of four men." Over the last twenty years, I've learned how to keep secrets. It doesn't really matter, since everyone already seems to think they know everything about me. So I hide. I avoid confrontation, I treat Xanax like a magic pill that will make it all go away, and I become everything they think I am. A slut. A whore. Nothing but trash. I can only name two guys who have ever made me feel like I was more than that. Jack is my best friend and I've loved him since I met him. Now, though, he's in love... with someone else, and I guess I need to get over him. Somehow. And then there's Dave. The guy I never gave a chance. The guy I used almost as much as people used me, because I wanted to pretend I was someone worth loving. Two years have passed since we last spoke, but I don't know how to stop thinking about him. My new therapist is making me face my past, and she tells me that life inevitably changes without our permission. I believe it, but I know what I am. I hear what she's saying to me, and I want to try again with Dave, to help Jack find joy, to love myself, and to move on. I just wonder if anyone can do that, really.

button.2  About the Author: Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She's written works in various genres - romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn't as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she's been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships - romantic, familial, friendly - because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn't matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future - human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah's stories. Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun. When Sarah isn't writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window. Circumstances throw them together, and Jamie thinks he finally has his chance to show Rhianne that she really is someone special. EXCERPT:
“Babe, please sit back down and listen to me, carefully okay?” He seemed to wait for an actual response so I just nodded back at him, telling him that I was listening to him. Then I sat back down. “The two things are not related. Yes, completely, definitely, indisputably, I owe you. That’s not up for debate, so don’t argue about it. But me wanting to spend time with you, wanting to get to know you better, it has nothing to do with that. Fair enough, if you don’t want to spend time with me, then I’m not going to push you on it, even though I wouldn’t understand. But don’t turn this around on me; I want to be your friend. I just want to really know you.”
I stared into his beautiful eyes for a few beats, trying to find any signs of dishonesty. None. He looked entirely truthful. Relief, like nothing I’d ever felt surged through me and I had the sudden urge to hug him. Literally just throw myself into his arms and squeeze, with everything that I had.
So I did.
I launched myself across the seat and threw myself into his arms. He stiffened at first but then I felt his body relax and his arms came around and pulled me closer. My throat was thick with unshed tears but I raised my head, looked him straight in the eye and whispered, “Thank you.”
“Nothing to thank me for babe. Everyone needs someone, sometimes.”

ANOTHER EXCERPT:
This excerpt is too funny, just in case you thought the first made the book seem to dramatic--

He could have been singing nursery rhymes for all I knew. I wasn’t listening to word he said. I was too busy staring at the tent in the front of his pajama bottoms. Oh my gosh! Did I cause that?
I giggled. A lot. I smacked my hand over my mouth but tears were streaming from my eyes I was laughing that hard...
Hard! Haha! Get it?
Jamie frowned but he must have noticed what I was staring at because he blushed! Guys don’t blush, or not that I knew of. But he did. Then he tried to mask his reaction.

Born and raised in Coventry, England – don’t think I’d ever really have the guts to leave here!! I’m a romantic at heart, love a happy ending and I’ve been known to make up my own endings in my head to other books if I didn’t agree with theirs haha!!
I listen to music CONSTANTLY!! Especially when I'm writing. I spend my days tidying up after my kids, making dinner, taking the kids to the park...nothing interesting!! But I like to spend time with my wonderful friends and family, going to concerts, on holidays, out for drinks :) all the usual things!!

I have always read books, magazines...the back of the shampoo bottle...ANYTHING I could, since I’ve been able to form words!! I wanted to write my own books even when I was just a little girl, scribbling little pieces down on scraps of paper, anything to get my ideas out!! KELLY'S REVIEW:
I hate to say I had very low expectations for this book. It seemed like this type of thing has been done so many times before. I was pleasantly surprised. The author has a charming writing style that captured my interest and I ended up loving the story and the characters. It is cute, fun and lighthearted. I highly recommend this as a dessert read: sweet and goes great with a glass (or two) of wine.

REVIEW: THE FAWN by Susan Griscom

Released Date: March 1, 2014
The Fawn
A New Adult Novel

Sexual content and mature subject matter, including domestic violence and abuse.

After a not-so-wonderful young adulthood—shuffled from one foster home to another—Lena Benton had hoped marriage would be her ticket to happiness. Wedded a year after high school graduation, Lena was certain she’d found her knight. But when Troy Harington’s true colors surface shortly after their glorious day of elopement, things aren’t quite as rosy as Lena had envisioned. When an unforeseen event turns ugly, all she can do is ... run!

But does she run far enough?

Jackson Beaumont prides himself on being a nature-loving, guitar-strumming carefree sort of guy, known for his eagerness to help injured animals find their way back into the wild. When Lena Benton walks into his bar, he’s once again swept off his feet with concern and desire to help the wounded. Will he risk having his heart torn apart again when the memory of the fawn he rescued as a child resurfaces?

Teaser Excerpt

Lena

No more tears, I ordered myself. It’s over. Was he dead? I hoped he was dead. I had to have killed him. My emotions—convoluted with anger and fear—dominated my judgment, giving me courage to go on. I’d never considered myself weak, to allow a man to have such complete and utter control over me—to beat me whenever he had the whim. How the hell had that happened?
Well, that person was gone and I didn’t want to be weak anymore. I lifted my glasses, studied my eye again, and thought of my mother—she’d been weak, I remembered. The vision of my stepfather beating my mother to death invaded my mind. I was nine at the time, and sat cowering in the corner, praying he wouldn’t come at me when he’d finished with her. I’d watched him slap my mom around before, and she’d always been able to recover. But that last time, he’d gone too far. I watched as my mother fell to her knees, clutching her stomach as his foot came off the ground and struck her in the face. She’d fallen backwards and her head hit the edge of the red, brick hearth of the fireplace. I covered my eyes and screamed as blood spewed out all over the bricks and the worn out, dingy cream carpet. A neighbor heard the screaming and called the police. They’d gotten there in time for me, but too late for my mother.
I’d been on my own since I was eighteen after enduring one foster home after another, never really fitting in. But at the tender age of fourteen I’d found my niche. An old discarded second-hand guitar I’d discovered in someone’s trash became my savior. As long as I had a guitar in my hands nothing else mattered. After a few months of living with some friends and several temporary gigs here and there, I’d been lucky enough to find a spot with a smalltime band singing and playing lead-guitar. They called themselves The Magic Crew. They were good too, on their way to stardom, and I was right there with them until Troy Harington showed up and swept me off my feet.
It seemed as if it had all been a dream as I thought about how he’d manipulated me into believing he loved me. Handsome? Oh yeah, he was handsome.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
The writing of The Fawn has been a bittersweet journey. This is a story very close to my heart and a story suffered by many women around the world. It's not a new story. It is one that has been told time and time again by many different people in many different ways and with many different experiences, but with the same old problem. Hopefully through my love of my characters and emotions I've made it an interesting one. I wrote the first twenty pages of this story back in 2008 shortly after finishing the first draft of Whisper Cape. Although the story of The Fawn is completely fiction, it does represent a time in my life when I was insecure and my self-esteem was at an all time low, sometime back in my late thirties early forties. Things changed, circumstances changed, and I was able to find my own self worth. One thing similar to The Fawn is that I didn't do it alone.  The people in my life had a huge influence on me, friends mostly. And my knight who helped me realize my own self-worth time and time again. Just as Jackson is there for Lena, my knight was there for me. That is where the similarities end. But the emotion is strong in this story and I hope I've been able to portray it well enough to be appreciated. Lena's journey is very different from my own, yet, holds so much weight in my heart.

Kerry's review of The Fawn by Susan Griscom
I give this book 4 stars!

I would actually give this book 4.5 stars if I could. I read it all in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down. The characters are so real and their emotions are so intense that I felt as if I were there with them. Lena’s pain and suffering made me want to do whatever it would take to help her. Jackson’s caring and drive to help the wounded reminds me so much of myself that I almost felt as if his character was modeled after me. The only thing that knocked it down half a star is that I feel the characters were just a little young to have had all the experiences that they had, but not by much. Susan’s very vivid attention to detail and description was just enough to really make you feel it, but not too much that it took away from the storyline in any way. I would very highly recommend this book to everyone, but make sure you have a tissue handy when you read it. I will be purchasing a paperback of this the first chance I get. It is definitely more than worth reading and rereading!

Excerpt:
When I entered the bar’s main bar area, I stopped dead in my tracks. Suddenly, all the blood rushed to my head and my palms began to sweat profusely. Sitting in a chair directly in front of me was the handsomest man I had ever seen or, as they would say in Greek, an “Adonis”. His muscles rippled out from under his sleeves and his smile could probably light the sky when dark. OMG, and those amber eyes…I felt hypnotized by them. His dark caramel colored skin and tight curls made my mouth water. I knew I looked like a fool standing there staring at him, but I couldn’t break my eyes away. Once he looked over at me, I broke my gaze. I couldn’t let him catch me gawking at him. Where had I seen this man before?

All of a sudden, I felt a push from behind and I fell forward. Feeling and probably looking flushed, I looked up to see the Adonis had his hand out in front of me. I was afraid to take it because I knew my own hand was sweaty, but I gave in and took his hand anyway. Time froze as my hand entered into his. There was a questionable look on his face; he was glaring at the man who had pushed me forward. He yelled, “Hey arse, watch where you’re going!” The man turned and looked at him as if he was going to come back over to us. Instead, he just cursed under his breath and continued walking. “Are you okay, Miss?” he asked in his Aurian accent. What was it with guys and accents? Most American women fall over themselves for a man with an exotic accent. I was dazed and confused, trying to process everything that had just happened. “Miss, Miss,” he grumbled.

Fading back into the moment, I finally stated, “Yes, I’m fine. Thanks”. I thought I was going to drop dead from embarrassment. He looked at me with those beautiful amber eyes and I thought, “Oh God, you are gorgeous.” I peered down at my dress to make sure I was truly alright and noticed a red spot on my dress.

Again, my Adonis spoke, “I think you’re bleeding”.

I removed my hand from his hand and excused myself. I headed as fast as my legs could carry me, without running, to the restroom to get myself cleaned up. Flustered, I pulled my dress up and noticed a long scratch on my lower thigh. I immediately dabbed water onto a paper towel and cleaned the wounded area. “Ahh, that’s better,” I mumbled under my breath. I returned to the bar area to thank the man once again but he was nowhere in sight. I shrugged and sat at a table near the back. Guess I won’t be seeing him again. I strolled over to the bar to order Roast and Potatoes, my favorite meal here. Finally, my dinner arrived. As I cut into the first slice of roast, I heard the voice again, “Are you sure you’re okay?” he whispered into my ear. His husky voice vibrating sent shivers down my spine. Where in Heaven’s name did he come from? I thought for sure he was gone from the bar a moment ago. I turned around to see him grabbing the back of my chair. We stared at each other for what felt like an eternity.

“Yes, I’m sure,” I answered truthfully. “Thank you again for your help.”

“Sure thing,” he said, “I wouldn’t want a beautiful woman like you getting hurt.” I blushed at his compliment and turned my head back to my plate. When I lifted my eyes to respond, he was gone once again. Was I imagining this person? Where had he gone? This was the second time that this happened to me.

Kelly's Review:
This is definitely not a Hallmark card type of Valentine's Day book. This collection of horror tales ranges from the creepy to the outright terrifying. The twisted minds of several authors, collected by CM Wright, have collaborated to bring you stories that will thrill you, give you shivers, and probably a few nightmares. And at the same time, they will leave you wanting more.
Each story is unique with fascinating results as a whole. I look forward to reading more by each of these talented authors.

REVIEW: Backward Compatible

Kelly's Review of Backward Compatible
By Sarah Daltry and Pete Clark

HILARIOUS!!!  As a self-proclaimed Geek, I was laughing throughout the book at the very accurate portrayal of the Gamer Geek world. Even if you have no idea what a MMORPG IS or what the title means, you will adore the attempts of the socially inept geeks as they try to have a relationship while they race to beat the secret Big Boss in a new video game. Their friends and co-gamers interrupt any attempts to be alone, and the game takes up every waking moment. Which is a lot as they sleep only in quick naps, surviving on Red Bull, Cheet-Os and Snickers with the occasional sandwich. Any Gamer will attest that those are the four basic food groups.

Backward Compatible perfectly melds the banter and social cluelessness found in The Big Bang Theory with the witty one-liners and tough-girl-in-a-boys’-world that Joss Whedon is famous for.

This is a clean, fun book suitable for geeks of all ages; I even read some to my mother and my daughter. Those who know me, know I very rarely give a book 5 stars. A great book rates four and only the most exceptional will receive 5 stars from me. This is one of those rare instances.

NEW COVER: Allusive Aftershock

Announcing the new cover for Allusive Aftershock by Susan Griscom
Allusive Aftershock is the thrilling adventure story of three teens trying to survive after a series of massive earthquakes destroys much of the infrastructure of California. As they try to search for survivors, feelings and relationships are challenged. This is a sweet and exciting but clean book for teens to YA, although as an adult, I loved it, too. ~~ Kelly

What happens when a major earthquake changes life as you know it and the boy you thought you hated ends up saving you? Three times!

Courtland Reese is the guy everyone hates and makes fun of because … well, he is weird. He communicates with animals. Strange or interesting, seventeen-year-old Adela Castielle can’t quite figure out, but when he saves her from being trampled by her own horse, she begins to understand him a little better and wants to learn more about him.

But, Max--her best friend/dream guy/someday-to-be-her-husband-only-he-doesn’t-know-it-yet--hates Courtland with a passion. Adela wants to know why, except neither boy is iealking.

When Max leaves her stranded in his parents' wine cave with his worst enemy, Courtland, after what the experts are calling a “megathrust” earthquake, Adela starts to question her loyalty to Max as steamy kisses in a dark damp cellar only fuel her emotions with more conflict.

But does she really have time to worry about that when fire, destruction, and mayhem surround her?

REVIEW: A New Life: Life of Recovery

Kelly's Review of A New Life: Life of Recovery By Samantha Jacoby

This is a coarse, gritty look at the making of a serial killer. The young girl, she doesn’t even know her age, tells her story in flashbacks and testimony. This is definitely NOT a romance book, as some have suggested. There is absolutely noting romantic about the physical, sexual and psychological abuse that was systematically used to train her to be the ultimate cold-blooded killer. No spoilers, that is revealed very early in the book. Be forewarned, this book may not be suitable for someone who has endured traumatic abuse.
This is more of a background piece than a novel. The flashbacks take place over a period of at least ten years while the current events takes just a few days and are not really resolved. The main character, Tori, doesn’t seem to even try to overcome her conditioning. Although the horrific abuse she suffered is simply stated mater-of-factually, I quickly realized that emotionally cutting herself off completely was her coping mechanism. I would like to see how she deals with it and if she realizes that the (Nope! No spoilers!) in the next book: Life of Doubt.
I was torn between giving this book 3 or 4 stars simply because it is only a background piece. However, the writing is very well done and the characters were compelling. So considering that it is an introduction to a series, I give this book 4 stars.

You can find this book on AMAZON

Description:
The Dragons, a ruthless gang, raised her to be strong. They taught her how to kill. They got more than they bargained for... Now she is free, or so she thinks, but can she truly escape her brutal past, finding true love amidst the sex and intrigue? Tori Farrell is on a mission to find her true identity, to break the ties to a dark underworld for good, and to save the people she cares about most - the family she has never known. She wants a new life, but first she must lay to rest the demons of her past.

This is the first in a series that chronicles the life of a young woman who is raised by a group of men who work as freelance mercenaries in the dark world of drug trafficking and murder for hire. They acquired the young woman at a very young age, as she has no memory of life before them. The book opens as she has broken free and moves through a series of current events and flashbacks that explain the beginning of her story. It is very dark with an unfinished feel, because in the end, the past is not the real story - the real story is what happens from here.

Excerpt
Quietly, he explained to her that he was going to arrange for another group to kill the Dragons and send her to live with someone who would take care of her. Not understanding, she asked why she would have to go with someone else. If the Dragons were dead, why couldn't she just go with him? He refused to explain, and simply said, "You are going to have a different life, baby girl. A life I cannot give you. You must be strong and willing to do whatever it takes to make this happen. Promise me you will do this...."

The Author Says:
"This is the first book in the series, A New Life, and lays out all of the background. Book 2 - Life of Doubt continues Tori's story as she begins to learn about what living a normal life means. It is also full of intrigue, sex, love and romance you will not want to miss - coming in December 2013.

"I thoroughly enjoyed writing these books, as they are full of hot sex, crazy love, and passionate romance as well as action and suspense. They are not a contemporary romance, as there is a great deal of mystery and excitement involved with Tori's new life rebuilt from the ashes of her past, and working her way through her stages of recovery are vital to the story. Life of Recovery is not a self-help book, nor is it any type of Christian romance or fiction - far from it.

"I love adventure and reading about strong women who are capable of taking care of themselves and those around them, and although the book opens when the chips are down, Tori is fast to get back on her feet and show her inner strength and ability to grow, learn and move forward. Her search for inner truth and love are inspirational and I hope that you will enjoy reading about her as much as I enjoyed creating her."
