REVIEW: Raven's Secret

Kelly's review of Raven's Secret by J. Matthew McKern

Raven’s Secret is an intense, fascinating book. It is told out of order, each chapter is in a different place on the timeline, but it is very clear and easy to keep track. The writing is strong and suspenseful, with a great balance between description, dialog and inner dialog. I was drawn in from the first paragraph. And I absolutely love the descriptions of how it feels to transform from human to raven and back. This is absolutely NOT your typical supernatural teenager book! It is touted as a YA book, but I highly recommend it to anyone age 16+. I give it 5 stars.

Everyone wants something from Branwen Riley. All Branwen wants is a chance at a normal life but cancer is going to steal that chance from her.

From a very early age, Branwen has known that she possesses abilities that set her apart. These abilities are the reason her mother uprooted her life again and again, always running from the truth. When she’s given a chance to join an experimental treatment program, her secret may end up being the one thing she has left to offer.

introducing Infatuated by Elle Jordan

Blurb:
You can't hide from love...even when you want to.
When I took a job as a bartender at Hanson’s to help pay for my classes, the last thing I expected to find was Kale Wilder. He’s sexy, smart, and he makes me smile and laugh faster than anyone ever has. More importantly, he makes me believe in Mr. Right.
But Kale came to the wrong place at the wrong time, because someone else has his eyes on me. Someone who watches my every move.
Kale’s the only one I want, but the more I feel for him, the more I fear for my safety. Because the other guy is getting closer and doesn't want to share. He’s made it clear if he can’t have me, no one can.

Teaser:
“You brought me a date?”
“I did,” he said, rocking back on his heels.
I eyed him, then made a show of looking around. “Is he cute?”
The sputtering fish look that crossed his face made me feel better than it should have. He recovered quickly and nodded. “I think he’s rather handsome. Kind of rugged. Blue eyes, dark hair.”

Elle Jordan is the mastermind behind all kinds of things that need masterminds. …okay, not really, but she IS the mastermind behind…something. Her name, maybe.
Elle lives in the south, about an hour from the Happiest Place on Earth (aka Disney), drinks enough Mtn. Dew to keep the company in business, and has four lovable (read: evil and conniving) pets. She’s also the secret, evil alter-ego of another name. She’d tell you that other name, but then it wouldn’t be a secret.

Books to read for Halloween

This special blog post showcases several books to get you in the mood for Halloween!

RIVER OF BONES by Jodi Cleghorn

River of Bones is the ultimate, creepy, keep-all-the-lights-on book. A near ghost town in the middle of nowhere in Australia, Elyora is a town outside of time hiding secrets only hinted at. This book is suspenseful, mysterious, and terrifying. Often all at the same time.
You can find it here: AMAZON

OCCUPATION by Jeff Dawson

I loved the old-fashioned, blood-thirsty vampire clans war story in Jeff Dawson’s Occupation. The thrilling book takes place as the Nazis invade Poland with sights on moving eastward. The warring vampire clans need to cooperate in order to save their predominantly Jewish “food supply” from being relocated. It’s hard to like the vampires in this book, until you compare them to the atrocities the Nazis are inflicting. A great lesser-of-two-evils story with characters you love to hate.
You can find it here: AMAZON

TERROR AT THE STERLING by Jeff Dawson

Jeff Dawson had done it again with a suspenseful, engrossing short novella: Terror At The Sterling. This is a real nail-biter suspense. It's short enough to be perfect to read while passing out candy to trick-or-treaters. But be careful when you open the door…

I HOPE YOU FIND ME by Trish Marie Dawson

I Hope You Find Me is a dystopian book that takes place immediately after a virus has killed just about everyone, everywhere. Amid the ghosts of the billions who died, one lone survivor and her dog search for other survivors while they attempt to find someplace they can live. This book is tear-inducing, terrifying, suspenseful, and finally hopeful.  It changes focus as the main character changes her focus in a well crafted, complex story.

ZOMBIE OVERLOAD SERIES by C. M. Wright

C.M. Wright’s wonderful Zombie Overload series is always a great read. The delightfully snarky main character fights zombies and tries to outrun the zombie horde while trying to save her family. I love the blend of humor and horror. It makes this a fun, but still suspenseful series. The first book in the series, a novella that introduces the main characters, is free. Be sure to pick up the next four books in the series while you’re at it. Once you get going, you won’t want to stop. The first two are also available together in one volume if you prefer.
1 - Dying to Live
2 - Fighting to Live
3 - Learning to Live
4 - Determined to Live
5 - Will to Live
You can find them all here: AMAZON

GROUND ZERO: A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE by Nicholas Ryan

Ground Zero: A Zombie Apocalypse is a story that will hold your attention to the end and you will not want to put it down! This is a nerve-wracking tale of survival and destruction that has only left me craving more. Cutter is a guy trying to deal with his own tragedies when suddenly everything around him gets destroyed, at one point literally! While only trying to make it on his own one day at a time, he ends up meeting and helping others along the way. The only drawback to this is that there are a lot of very minor characters who are so well written that you are left wondering what happened to them later.

Introducing Night With A Tiger by Marissa Dobson

NIGHT WITH A TIGER
An Alaskan Tigers book
by Marissa Dobson

For Adam Merks the Alaskan Tigers have always come first, but when he finds Robin, his loyalty is divided. His tiger demands he stay home to guard his mate while his duty to his clan pushes him toward danger.
When a rogue shifter murders her husband, Robin Zimmer, is sent running for her life. Looking over her shoulder with every turn, she’s tired and nearing the end. When Adam finds her, she has a choice—trust a shifter or continue running on her own.
Will Adam be able to show Robin the benefits of their mating and living within a shifter clan before the unknown scares her away?

CHAPTER ONE:

With the precision of years of experience behind the helm, Adam Merks landed the helicopter. The private landing strip, just south of Dallas, Texas, was quiet. The only sound he heard as he stepped onto the grass was the rustle of leaves and the chirps of birds in the distance. His rented four-by-four pickup truck was parked twenty feet ahead, shining like a black diamond in the evening sun. It seemed too clean and new for where he was going. It would make him stand out, but this vehicle was the best Connor could do on such short notice.
Anxious to begin his search for Robin Zimmer, he tugged his small duffle bag from the helicopter and headed to the truck. With a little luck on his side, he’d be able to seek out Robin before night fell on the sleepy little town she was holed up in this week.
Slinging his duffle bag over his shoulder, he jogged toward the truck desperate to get out of the sweltering sun. After living in Alaska for years, he wasn’t used to the heat, especially not this type in April. He held no desire to spend any unnecessary time here. The sooner he found Robin and convinced her he only wanted to help, the quicker he could return to Alaska and the cool spring weather.
Opening the driver’s door, he found a pair of black cowboy boots and matching hat. Just the right outfit he needed to fit in at Royalwood. Tossing his bag onto the passenger’s seat, he leaned against the truck and unlaced his black steel-toe boots. All Alaskan Tigers guards wore these boots for traction in the Alaskan snow. He slipped on the cowboy boots and wiggled his toes inside, trying to get used to the feel of the pointed toe. He then reached in the cab for the cowboy hat before a quick glace in the side mirror at his reflection. Adam was stunned. The hat made him look the part, but now he had to blend in and appear to be just another southern boy passing through. In a small town like Royalwood, he would also have to act the part for people to look passed him.
Ready to get the day moving, he jumped into the pickup and started the engine, desperate to get the air conditioning on to cool down the sweltering heat filling the truck. With the cool air circulating, he unclipped his cell phone from his belt. Sliding his finger over the screen to unlock it, he sent Ty a text message. Arrived and on my way to Royalwood. I’ll be in touch once I make contact with Robin.
He dropped the phone into the cup holder and shifted the truck in Drive. Determination ran through him. If there was any hope to save Tabitha and all of the tiger shifters, he had to find Robin before Pierce and his gang of rogues. She held a key to Pierce’s organization, and it was Adam’s job to find out what it was.

Author Bio:

Angee was born in Houston, Texas in 1977, to an interesting family. Her mother and father separated when she was young. She lived with her mother who later remarried a wonderful man, who had a huge impact on her as she grew up. Angee has always had a love of reading, mostly paranormal. As a child, she would sneak up at late night when her mom thought she was sleeping, to read. They moved around a lot, eventually settling in Deep East Texas. Angee married at a young age and eventually divorced. She has raised her now 16 year old son alone. Angee works full time as a pre-hospital nurse and sometimes sees things that would make the rest of us have nightmares. On other days, she is blessed to see miracles. These things are what drive her to write.

In 2006, she was diagnosed with a rare disease, shortly after that she was told she would be on full disability in five years and most likely to be dead in ten. She’s fought to live a normal life every day since and is beating those odds. She works at a demanding job, is a single mom, cares for an elderly mother, and two dogs. Angee describes her job as- “I fight to save people’s lives. Sometimes I lose, sometimes I win. It's the emotional roller coaster of that job, which leads me to writing. I'm able to put those emotions into my characters and let them out of my heart and soul.”
Excerpt
At nine that night, I carried the sleeping boy to his bed and headed towards mine. It had been a long week. I may just sleep all night and day. I crawled into my bed, and turned the lamp off. The darkness of the room made me uncomfortable for some reason. I dozed off anyway, at some point in the night something woke me up.
I don’t know what. My room was glowing red. All the curtains were closed and lights were off. Even the door was closed. The air felt heavy, I felt threatened. My heart raced, my breaths were labored; I had broken out in a sweat. What was this? I spoke aloud, following my gut. “This is my house and you are not welcome here. Leave here and leave all in this place alone.” I said through closed eyes, afraid of what I may see in the red glow. The heaviness slowly lifted but I didn’t open my eyes until the next morning. Josh didn’t mention it to me and I damn sure wasn’t going to scare him.
Later that day I took my horse out for a ride through the woods. The sun was so damn bright my sunglasses just weren’t helping. My eyes felt like someone had lit a match and thrown into each of them. Hence, the ride in the woods, it was shadier.
After about an hour of riding straight into the depths of the forest, I turned my horse around and began making my way out. I had ridden in these woods for most of my childhood. I knew every inch of them. I rounded the big oak to see a man standing there. He startled me. I almost yelled but remained calm. “Hi, are you lost?”
“No, I’m not lost. I came to see you.

Review of GROUND ZERO by Nicholas Ryan

My review of Ground Zero: A Zombie Apocalypse by Nicholas Ryan
I give this book 4 stars!

I was sucked in by just the first couple of lines. This is a story that will hold your attention throughout the book and you will not want to put it d...own! The only confusing part at the beginning is that you start out following different people as the apocalypse is unfolding. I wasn’t quite sure which was going to be the main character at first. Once Cutter is introduced the story really gets going and I realized the other people were just helping to set the scene. Also, some of the characters are introduced and once you know their names, you don’t hear about them again. However, it was set up perfectly for a sequel and I can’t wait to see what other books the author will come out with. I highly recommend you get this book and be sure to put it at the TOP of your reading list!

EXCERPT
“They said alliances are needed but to remember that not all who claim to be our allies really are.”  Rose replied.
Pyre cut in right after Rose stopped talking. “They also hinted that we have an enemy in the horde.”
Oceanus’ eyes shot open as large and round as discs. “What?!”
Rose shot a glare at Pyre. “Pyre!”
“He needed to know Rose!” Pyre shot back in defense.
“I know he did and I was going to tell him. Just not like this. I wanted to speak more with them on this before bringing it up.” Rose said softly, wondering if her words made any sense to them. From the way they were looking at her, she would guess not.
“I mean. What if they’re wrong? It’s possible you know they’ve been wrong before!” Rose said desperately as Oceanus growled.
Pyre spoke up, voicing Oceanus’ exact thoughts. “They’ve never been wrong Rose. Not once! Maybe you’re the enemy they spoke about.”
“They have been wrong! I only tell you what’s important to the horde! I don’t tell you everything they tell me!” Rose said as her own anger began to build. She was really getting fed up with everyone automatically assuming things concerning her.
Pyre shoved her. His heart cried out as he reverted to his once natural treatment of the dragon he only minutes before had considered his friend. “What have they lied about then Rose?”
Losing the current, she spiraled toward Caprae. She caught a new current right before she would have slammed quite ungracefully into the ground. “They said someone would love me for me! They said I wouldn’t be an outcast once we found Caprae. And for a little while I thought maybe they were right about that too. But they weren’t they were wrong!” She turned and flew off refusing to let the two males see her cry.
“Rose, wait!” Pyre called out trying to fly after her. As her form turned into a spec on the horizon, he stopped with a sigh and hung his head. “I’m sorry…” He muttered as he silently cursed himself for his stupidity.

The Rise of Xosha Scavenger Hunt

EXCERPT:

“Oni. Anjyls... There's six of them about three sun phases behind us.” The squad leader reported officially.

This was not good. The horde had only been in the air about six hours now, and if the Anjyl squad was only three behind them, how many days had they been flying nonstop to catch up?

Oceanus scanned the immense stretch of water below them. After hours or searching, his eyes scouted an island. “Rose, take Jade and the browns and hide there. I will come get you when it's clear. Protect the few eggs we have at all costs!”

Rose blinked a bit surprised that she had been asked to carry out this order, then again, Oceanus tended to try to treat her like she belonged while the rest of the horde made her feel like an outcast. She shrugged off the feeling and changed her trajectory, angling down to spiral toward the appointed island. One by one the browns in the group dropped into line behind Rose with Jade taking up the tail as the wind began to pick up bringing a slight chill with it.

Oceanus did a quick count, that left them sixteen to fight, and fight he would. He turned his mass and bellowed. The others fanned out behind him.

“Obsidian, your squad will stand behind me as a buffer between the Anjyls and the others. Pyre, stand behind Obsidian's squad. You'll be safe there.”

The red looked to Oceanus like he had just lost his mind. “What?! I won't! I want to fight with you!”

“You're too young, Pyre. Now do as I command!” Oceanus growled.

Pyre growled back, his amber depths flaming. “I won't! I'm not a child, Oceanus! Jade is a child, and she's where she'll be safe. I'm old enough to fight! Father would have thought so!”

Anger swelled in Oceanus' entire frame. A taloned arm lifted and connected with Pyre's face sending the yearling sprawling. “Father is not Oni anymore! Father died like the rest trying to make sense of the betrayal of the humans! You're just like him, Pyre! Stop running to your death. If something happens to me, it'll be up to you to get everyone to the land Rose spoke of. Now do as I told you to!”

Darkness Betrayed RELEASED!!!

Darkness Betrayed
Released

Meet the Author

Author Bio:

A former Army brat, Christine Hughes moved quite often. She spent much of her time losing herself in books and creating stories about many of the people she'd met. Falling in love with literature was easy for her and she majored in English while attending college in New Jersey. Not sure where her love of reading and writing fit, she became a middle school English teacher. After nine years of teaching others to appreciate literature, she decided to take the plunge and write her first novel. Now at home focusing on making writing her new career, she spends her time creating characters and plot points instead of grading papers.

Darkness Betrayed

BLURB:
Even the devil was once an angel...
Still reeling from a devastating betrayal, and a shaky relationship with Ethan, her Guardian Angel, Samantha reluctantly seeks comfort with Damien - the original fallen, the devil whispered about and part of the original deception of Adam and Eve. She learns of the real reason for his existence – a sad and twisted reason that would force even the most ardent Bible thumpers to show sympathy. He agrees to help Samantha fight Sebastian but what she doesn't know is there is a price for Damien's involvement. A price she would never allow. The only problem is, she isn't the one making the sale.

EXCERPT:

“Lucas isn’t healing as quickly as Sebastian would like. That much I know.” “You already said that. What do you know about Lucas?”
“Sebastian is very angry with him.”
I snorted. “I’m sure.”
Malakai cocked his grotesque head to the side. “His betrayal is the only thing you focus on?”
“It’s the only thing I can focus on.” Rage built up and threatened to break free.
Ethan stepped closer, the tip of his sword grazing the back of Malakai. Eyes wide, he replied hastily. “You haven’t let me finish. I do have a message from one who is in Sebastian’s circle. One you’ve never met but have heard about. One who is tired of Sebastian’s ways. One who wants to return to how it’s supposed to be.”
“And who is the ‘one’ you speak of?”
“He is the one who has sent me to deliver his message.”
Vibrations ran through me. “Stop talking in circles! Give the message you were sent to give or I will kill you. You have no place here.”
“Ahh.” Malakai’s eyes narrowed. “I told him you wouldn’t listen. I told him you were not ready to hear his proposal. You are still…immature.”
“Enough!” The tip of Ethan’s sword pierced the wing of the Exiled. “Go back to whoever sent you. Tell them we don’t talk in circles. If you have nothing to tell us, we have nothing to listen to. Our patience is wearing thin.”
Malakai’s hands flew to his face as he began to shake. Didn’t really look to me like whoever had sent him had thought any it through. This minion was about to crack under the pressure. I was only too happy to speed up that process.
Arms outstretched, he stepped away. “No. No. I was sent. You must listen. Death at your hand would be welcomed in light of what I will face if I fail. You must listen. The purest fallen has sent me. He is ready to make a deal with you to overthrow Sebastian and rid the world of him once and for all.”
My mind raced as I tried to process the information. Who was the purest fallen?
Ethan whispered and I barely hear him over the din that began to rise around me. “Damien.”

Excerpt:
The trip to the airport took about 45 minutes—enough time to transform my outfit and freshen up for him. Once we got to the airport, we didn't have to wait at all. He was standing outside in a gray suit with a white button down shirt, already unbuttoned due to the heat. Bernard waved at him and he stepped up to the right side of the door to get in.
    "Hi," I said shyly.
"Hi, baby. Wow. You look amazing, as always."
The blazer had come off and the four-inch leopard print shoes were on. The skirt looked much shorter on me without the blazer. I slid toward him as he grabbed me and placed me on top of his lap.
"Happy Anniversary," he whispered sensually into my ear. His nose traced a line from my jaw to my neck and his fingers softly rubbed the inside of my thigh. I giggled nervously. His touch felt so good, so safe. "One month down, 959 more to go," he groaned, his hands now on my back, pulling me close.
    "That's 80 years, A."
"I'm in love with a math genius."

When Lena Benton walks into his bar, he’s once again swept off his feet with concern and desire to help the wounded. Will he risk having his heart torn apart again when the memory of the fawn he rescued as a child resurfaces?

Something about Susan

I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, spending most of my time daydreaming or playing around in the mud. I grew out of the mud play, well, most of the time, a good soak in the mud is always fun. I still daydream often and sometimes my daydreams interrupt my daydreams. So, I write to remember them. If I didn't write, I think my mind would explode from an overload of fantasy and weirdness. To the annoyance of my friends and family, my characters sometimes become a part of my world. During my childhood, I would frequently get in trouble in school for daydreaming. Eventually, my vivid imagination paid off and I had the privilege of writing and co-directing my sixth-grade class play--a dreadful disaster, though not from my writing, of course. I'm pretty sure it was the acting.

I enjoy writing about characters living in small quaint towns and sometimes they tend to lean toward the unusual and edgy.

My paranormal playing field delves into a different milieu, abandoning vampires and werewolves, but not discounting them. Someday I might like to write a novel about vamps and those furry creatures. But for now I like the bizarre mixed with romance. A strong hero or heroine confronted with extraordinary forces of nature, powers and capabilities gets my blood running hot as does a steamy contemporary romantic suspense.
